Biography: The motive for this killing spree has never been revealed while Martin Bryant serves out a life sentence. Because he inherited a large sum of money from a family friend, Bryant never had to work. At the time of the event, he was 28-years old and in the three years prior, had demonstrated a significant interest in guns and weaponry. It was revealed that Bryant had a significantly below average IQ, and while in police custody, kept referencing the massacre in Dunblane, Scotland the prior month. He wanted to know if he had killed more people and seemed to be very pleased when told what the death toll was. He was captured after accidentally setting himself on fire while burning down a Bed & Breakfast, owned by two people with whom his family had been feuding with in years past.
