Name of Killer : George Jo Hennard
Category: Spree Killing
Location: Killeen, Texas
Date: October 16, 1991
Crime: After plowing his pickup truck through the front window of a popular local restaurant, used a Glock 17 and Ruger P89 handguns to kill twenty three and injure twenty more in a killing spree which lasted only sixteen minutes. He then shot and killed himself.
Biography: Known as the 'Luby's Massacre' after the restaurant in which George Jo Hennard crashed his pickup truck through the plate glass window and opened fire on the 80 patrons and workers who were present. Until the Virginia Tech spree killing, this was the deadliest shooting rampage in American history. Hennard was described as creepy, bitter, disgruntled and deranged by several that knew him. Prior to the spree, Hennard sent a rambling, handwritten letter to two young women who lived near him in Belton, Texas. Apparently they had both spurned his advances and the letter described a fantasy relationship with both women. An acquaintance of Hennard's revealed that he had discussed suicide on several occasions prior to 1984. Others described him as combative and instable and someone who had a deep hostility towards women. Before shooting himself through the left eye, Hennard could be overheard calmly talking to his victims before shooting them point blank.
