Name of Killer : Thug Behram
Category: Serial Killing
Date: 1790 - 1840
Crime: As the leader of the Thuggee cult in India, was present at the murder by strangulation of 931 people, while admitting to personally having committed 125 or more. He was executed by hanging in 1840.
Biography: Details regarding the early life of this cult leader are non-existent, however there is much discussion and confusion regarding the purpose and activities of his organization. Historians liken Behram's group to an early version of our modern day organized crime rings, rather than a religious cult as it is purported to be. Many, falsely attribute him to 931 killings, whereas he has admitted to being present at all of the strangulations, but personally executing 125 men. In fact, Behram never stood trial for any of the murders he has confessed to. All of the executions performed by his gang, were by strangulation using a special, ceremonial cloth called a rumal. Behram turned traitor and informed his British captors regarding all of the activities and crimes of his gang of 25 - 50 men. In spite of his cooperation he was hanged.
