Name of Killer : Jack the Ripper
Category: Serial Killing
Date: 1888 - 1891
Crime: Arguably, the most infamous serial killer of all time, the 'Ripper' as he was called, was never apprehended and to this date, nobody has ever been conclusively tied to the killing of between 5 and 16 prostitutes in Whitechapel, London.
Biography: Jack the Ripper is credited with at least 5 brutal murders, all having taken place in poorer areas in and around Whitechapel, London in late 1888. The attacks typically involved prostitutes who had their throats cut from behind and then their internal organs removed. Although killings continued around Whitechapel until 1891, this later series of attacks were never conclusively tied to the Ripper, but did serve to feed the legend. The investigation was a major undertaking considering the times and included over 2,000 interviews, 300 suspects being investigated and 80 people detained for further questioning, however, no arrests and conviction were ever achieved. The notoriety of the Ripper case, and subsequent world-wide frenzy about the crimes, ultimately led to the explosion of the newspaper and periodical industry as readers around the world could not get enough coverage of these events.
